What Actually Determines Your Metabolic Rate?
Updated October 3, 2026 · General educational information
“Metabolism” is often used as if it were a single number that explains whether someone gains or loses weight. In reality, daily energy expenditure is made up of several components that interact with body size, activity, food intake, and adaptation.
1. Resting energy expenditure
Your body uses energy even when you are resting. Maintaining organs, circulation, breathing, temperature regulation, and other basic functions requires energy. This is usually the largest component of daily expenditure for many adults.
2. Movement and activity
Walking, exercise, household tasks, standing, and other movement add to energy expenditure. The amount can vary considerably between people and from day to day.
3. The thermic effect of food
Digesting and processing food also requires energy. Protein generally has a higher thermic effect than carbohydrate or fat, but this is only one part of total energy expenditure.
4. Adaptation
Energy expenditure is not perfectly fixed. During weight loss, changes in body mass and behavior can reduce energy expenditure. That does not mean the body has “broken” its metabolism; it means the system responds to changing conditions.
Where mitochondria fit
Mitochondria are structures inside many cells that help convert energy from nutrients into ATP, a form of energy cells can use. They are fundamental to cellular energy production, but a statement about mitochondrial biology by itself does not establish that a supplement will cause meaningful weight loss.
