Metabolism
Metabolism Myths: What the Evidence Can and Can't Tell Us
Myth: metabolism is a single switch
Metabolism describes a network of chemical processes. Daily energy expenditure also has several components, so “speeding up metabolism” can mean different things.
Myth: a mechanism proves a weight-loss effect
A pathway can be biologically relevant without an intervention producing a large change in body weight. See Mechanism vs. Evidence.
Myth: one food or supplement determines your metabolic rate
Individual foods and ingredients can affect energy expenditure or appetite in specific ways, but the overall effect on body weight depends on the whole diet, activity, body composition, and time.
A better question
Instead of asking “Does this boost metabolism?”, ask: “In well-designed human studies, does this intervention meaningfully change an outcome I care about?”
